Kumbh Mela is the largest religious and holiest gathering in the world, and is inscribed on the UNESCO?s Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. A mass Hindu pilgrimage of faith, the Kumbh Mela is the most peaceful religious gathering where people of different classes participate without any discrimination. Traditionally four fairs are widely recognized as the Kumbh Melas - the Haridwar Kumbh Mela, the Allahabad Kumbh Mela, the Nashik-Trimbakeshwar Simhastha, and Ujjain Simhastha.
Celebrated four times over the course of 12 years, the site of the observance rotate between four pilgrimage places on four sacred rivers - at Haridwar on the Ganges River, at Ujjain on the Shipra, at Nashik on the Godavari, and at Prayag (modern Allahabad) at the confluence of the Ganges, the Jamuna, and the mythical Sarasvati.
The celebration at each of these sites is based on a distinct set of astrological positions of the Sun, the Moon, and Jupiter. The Kumbh Mela at Prayag is the one that attracts millions of pilgrims from far and wide. In addition, a great Kumbh Mela is held every 144 years at Prayag. This is the one celebrated after approximately 3 years of Kumbh Mela at Haridwar.
